Like many who have made the move from mainland Australia, Anthony and Ellen were captivated by Tasmania’s unique charm from the moment they began exploring what the island had to offer. What followed was a leap of faith that would change their lives completely.

While browsing property online during the Covid lockdowns — originally considering a remote working arrangement for Anthony’s role at one of Australia’s major energy companies — the couple stumbled across a small farm for sale in the Tamar Valley. Unable to visit in person, they took the plunge on a sight-unseen purchase, drawn by the beautiful location nestled among the region’s celebrated vineyards and the promise of a quieter, more fulfilling way of life. Based in Loira at the very heart of the valley, it proved to be one of the best decisions they ever made.

Over the following years Anthony and Ellen transformed the property into a beautiful accommodation retreat, welcoming guests looking to explore the Tamar Valley and discover its world class cool climate wines. The real turning point came one afternoon over a glass of wine and lunch at a local vineyard, when they noticed staff out harvesting grapes and — in true adventurous spirit — asked if they could join in. What followed was several days of hands-on grape picking, and an entirely new passion was ignited.

With Ellen continuing to oversee the accommodation, Anthony turned his attention to a fresh opportunity. When changes among local tour operators left a gap in the market, the timing felt right. Tamar Wine was born in late 2025 — a tour operation run by people who don’t just know the region, but genuinely live and breathe it.

Since launching, the journey has been everything they hoped for and more. From building relationships with the winemakers and vineyard owners to sharing memorable days with guests from around Australia and beyond, Anthony and Ellen have embraced every challenge and celebrated every highlight along the way.

Today Tamar Wine offers two signature full day tours — the Tamar Valley Wine Tour and the Pipers Brook Sparkling Wine Tour — with groups of up to ten guests or intimate bespoke experiences tailored for individuals and couples. And in March 2026 they launched their most exciting offering yet: a unique two day tour combining both the Pipers Brook and Tamar Valley regions, with an overnight stay at their stunning Loira property.
